The Colours, and Flowers of Autumn

As florists, autumn is one of our favourite times of the year. As the months cool, we see fewer brilliant and bright blooms of summer, and welcome the moodier, richer tones of burgundies and purples, oranges and golds. Florists love the possibilities that these colours bring.

With mild temperatures and gorgeous colours, autumn is a wonderful time of year for a wedding. Anyone in Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa or Te Puke looking for wedding florals – or after flowers delivered for any occasion – is in for a treat when it comes to their blooms. In that vein, here are our florists’ guide to the colours and flowers that best compliment this season.

Burgundies and Purples

Burgundy and purple are perfect autumn colours. Fresh flowers available in NZ in autumn come in all sorts of shades and tones of burgundy and purple. Some of our favourite blooms to add to your flower delivery include belladonna, celosia, delphiniums, tulips and dahlias. Combining some deep purples with some soft pinks, accented by natural greens and whites, make for stunning bouquets, whether they’re in a vase on the kitchen table or being tossed to your guests at the end of your wedding.

Oranges and Golds

Mirroring the changing of autumn leaves, a pop of brightly coloured orange and golden flowers can bring vibrancy to a flower delivery. There are bold yellow and bronze chrysanthemums that will make for a beautiful display of fresh flowers in any office, home or special event. There’s also rich marigolds in plenty of different autumn colours as well as celosia, gorgeous little spires of orange, red and yellow.

Whites and Greens

The art of the bouquet is all about balance, which means using natural greens and whites to balance the deep purples or vibrant yellows of this season. White orchids makes a great focal point, whereas alyssums are charming little white blooms that bulk out your flowers without taking attention away from the main attraction. Nicknamed ‘carpet of snow’, they’re also a timely reminder of the cold to come!

Green is of course an important part of any florist’s creation. In Tauranga, Papamoa, Mount Maunganui and Te Puke we’re blessed with plenty of greenery that easily incorporates into a floral display. The florists at Arrange Floral love to make use of plenty of green leaves as well as ivy, rosemary and bell of Ireland to accent the autumnal blooms.
